toKata (2023) by Bart Vanderbeke

marimba – Norsk Musikforlag

toKata is a cheerful and virtuosic marimba piece presented in 3 different versions.
In its original 4-mallet form, toKata is intended as an ‘encore’ dedicated to international marimba soloist Katarzyna Mycka. Her virtuoso playing at the Brussels Percussion Festival, where we were both invited in 2006 left a lasting impression on me.
The fantastic book ‘TWO’ by Gene Koshinski and his plea for the art of 2-mallet performance inspired me to create toKata #2, a 2-mallet version of toKata dedicated to him. The 3rd version, toKata #2*2, dedicated to both Katarzyna and Gene, is a duet for 2 players with 2 mallets sharing 1 marimba. As in 4 MOVEMENTS, toKata includes a special notation system in addition to classical notation, as a way of promoting technical insights and accessibility.

UPgrades 3.1 (2023) by Bart Vanderbeke

etudes for piano – Norsk Musikforlag
Upgrades 3.1 is a delightful and exhilarating set of musically attractive etudes that are relatable to young people today.
Each piece addresses specific technical and musical challenges that it is necessary for a classical pianist to master. The technical side of each study is always linked to an accessible subject and musical idiom.
UPgrades 3.1 builds up in terms of difficulty, with the preparatory exercises forming an ideal starting point. These exercises serve a duel purpose: on the one hand, they offer a way of getting to know a piece from a different angle. At the same time, they also integrate ways of addressing typical learner difficulties into the pedagogical framework for piano teaching in a musical way.

#reBoot (2023) by Bart Vanderbeke

marimba – Norsk Musikforlag

#reBoot is a viruoso concert piece for marimba.
The structure is a kind of marriage between a repetitive musical obstinate on the one hand and motifs taken from Romanticism on the other. There are 2 large repetitive sections. Each has a clear technical and musical build-up, occasionally flirting with a poppy vibe. #reBoot also has an introduction and a virtuoso coda which, together with the 2 large middle parts, provide an overall musical and technical structure which references the great examples of the Romantic era. The 3-layer composition structure (bass, accompaniment and melody) also clearly refers to that same Romantic tradition for keyboard. Its accessible musical idiom and virtuosic flair make #reBoot suitable for an audience of enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. At the same time, it’s a brilliant concert piece to show off with!

4 MOVEMENTS (2021) by Bart Vanderbeke

4 multi-percussion & piano – Norsk Musikforlag

4 MOVEMENTS offers a set of musically and technically demanding challenges in an exciting chamber music environment.

Each piece tackles the abstract rhythmic sounds of multi-percussion in a harmonious way, marrying polyphonic percussion with the tangibly melodic sounds of the piano to create a well-balanced, coherent whole. The compact, clear setup using common percussion instruments aids practical feasibility, and adding piano ensures the music is attractive and accessible. 4 MOVEMENTS includes a special notation for the percussion parts in addition to classical notation as a way of promoting technical insight and accessibility.

TRANS4MATIONS (2020) by Bart Vanderbeke

4 mallet multi-percussion studies for drum set – Norsk Musikforlag

Methodical approach to learning and refining 4 mallet technique using only a drum set.

“This book transforms the drum set into a four-mallet instrument. It encourages drum set performers to approach the instrument in a different manner. Marimbists and other four-mallet players will find this an enjoyable way to apply their fundamental techniques.”

Interactive Stories (2016) by Bart Vanderbeke

for timpani & piano – Alfonce Production

Interactive Stories – a fine collection of five pieces because of their musical variety and graded difficulty.

The Interactive part of the title gives away the basic idea of these pieces. They are deliberately written to make the fullest possible use of the dialogue between timpani and piano. This creates pieces which are high in ‘chamber music’ content and tell a vivid musical story. They can be used in various stages of the percussionist development and are ideal pieces to play at concerts or exams.

Short Stories (2014) by Bart Vanderbeke

marimba – Alfonce Production

Short Stories – 8 charming and attractive musical miniatures to be discovered and played by both aspiring and professional players.

The experiences and anecdotes as father of two beautiful daughters form the inspiration of this collection. With Short Stories aim to make a contribution to an inspiring marimba repertoire. In these pieces I have therefor tried to fill musical gaps in the existing repertoire and make accessible and pleasant little pieces of music. In composing these miniatures I deliberately chose tot write them for 4.3 marimba so they can be discovered and played by both novice and professional players.
